Our 60th Year

This year the Arkansas Genealogical Society turns 60 years old. In 1962 the Washington County Historical Society sponsored the creation of a state-wide genealogical society to take over the work they had begun and expand it to cover the entire state. Then, in 1967 AGS was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.

Lonoke County History Book

A hard bound book is being developed about the history of Lonoke County. Families are invited to submit a 500 word family history story and one picture for the book for free. Businesses and organizations are also invited to do so, but at a charge. The publishing company will help with any editing if needed, so people don’t have to be literary scholars to submit at story! The deadline is May 30, 2022 and the book will be printed by early 2023 which is the sesquicentennial year of Lonoke County. See the flier for more details.

1950 Census Released To Public On April 1

The federal government conducts a census every ten years. Initially, only summaries are released to the public. The full information, listing individuals, is kept private for 72 years. However, the release only contains images of the pages. Many many volunteers have been organized to transcribe the hand-written pages. It is expected that these transcripts and a full index will be available in a few months.

Outreach Committee

AGS recognizes that there are some local clubs in the state that are struggling to survive due to the pandemic and other issues. We would like to help. If you are in such a club or know of one, please let us know by writing to outreach@argensoc.org.
